Biographies for the creative team behind Black Maria.
Tom Armstrong - Composer
Tom Armstrong read music at York University, remaining as a postgraduate to study for a DPhil in composition with Roger Marsh. He has also studied with Magnus Lindberg, Colin Matthews, Oliver Knussen and Vinko Globokar. His work has been performed all over the UK by leading ensembles including [rout], the Endymion Ensemble, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Composer’s Ensemble. Radio Three broadcasts have included performances by the BBC Philharmonic and the pianist Andrew Ball. In 1999 he was awarded a place on the prestigious International Course for Professional Choreographers and Composers at Bretton Hall where, amongst others, he worked with Kenneth Tharp and Wayne MacGregor. He has also worked with Sonia and Sabra Sabri and Mayuri Boonham on Ballet Independents’ Group Transference project at the ROH. In 2000 he received the Millennium Commission from the National Youth Ballet to collaborate with Susie Crow on FIBBA which was performed at the Lowry Centre and Sadler’s Wells. Recent commissions include works for the City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra, [rout], the Trillium brass quartet, Making Music and Gemini. Tom’s musical, Catching the Sun, premiered in March at the Guildford International Music Festival, and To the Measures Fall for baroque flute and guitar premieres at the Wigmore Hall in September 2007. After Black Maria Tom’s next work is for the violinist Darragh Morgan, scheduled for spring 2008.
